Happy Sunday Friends. I bring to yee ears a playlist for the season! I haven’t made a playlist in awhile, since I usually only have the time to do them for classes. It was fun to get back into my musical brain! When I was younger, I remember imagining musicals set to my favorite songs. I’d find narratives to get them all to connect together. As I got older than manifested in me curating playlists for my workplaces, local restaurants, and church too.
I highly recommend listening to this in order! I like the way it flows personally. And I think it’s great to set the vibe for your Sunday afternoon or evening to stave off the Sunday scaries 😤 It might even get you hyped up for the week ahead!
I always think of order when I’m making playlists. I’m the type of person who doesn’t like when a playlist has the same artist back to back lol. They can be separate 😂
I’m thinking about it now and really feeling the Aries season even matches this anecdote. It was around my teenage years when music really started to fuel my anger, willpower, confidence, and movement in life. I was also the most combative, rebellious, and arrogant.
The energy of the current season has shown itself to already be a little spicy in lots of ways. I always say that Aries is the teenager of the Zodiac. It’s a little bit Elmo in front of the fire; little girl in front of burning building meme.
Something in the air is leading way to transformation and change. The playlist has some moments of groove, disco, funk. All of these genres are associated with the Black community; and, around eras of time where massive social and political “FUCK YOU’s” for good came about-even though they weren’t great to experience while they happened. So, there’s a fair bit of teen and young adult angst being channeled into this.
I grew up in the era of time that brought us a lot of media that was anti-state, anti-oppression. One example is Avatar: the Last Airbender. If this playlist is anyone, it’s Zuko, lol. Interestingly, Avatar Studios and Netflix are both creating new continuations of the ATLA universe currently. It makes sense that much of the energy of Aries season is showing up in government, politics, and culture.
In between these songs of change and challenge, I did want to include moments of community. Hope. I see so much unity coming into this astrological new year-though it may come out of necessity during oppression or chaos. Personally…I am a realist, but I am also a lover of hope. Aries does not think too much, it just does, just is. So much of this season feels unapologetic in ways that are soft and ways that are strong too.
Where we’re at right now, or at least me, is at this point of saying “fuck it” but in the most hopeful way. Like someone falling in love even though they know they’re going to be on 90 Day Fiance. Like me, publishing this piece with a “let me just throw it up attitude” so I can actually get back in the groove.
This season is one of demands, and demanding of worth. It’s not coming in the way that a child stomps their feet in the toy store. It’s more like the first love you sneak out for. It’s giving an increase of blaring music even though you know your hearing as an old person will suffer. It’s a “per my last email”.
Overall I think we find ourselves in a weird type of Wild West. I think we as people have-or will-embark on journeys so new that we must make our own way. It is not always comfortable, or fun, but that’s not what we think about at the first moments. It won’t be what we think about when we feel the pride of our results. Even when we do think about the necessary pains we must go through with growth, the moments of awkward angst aren’t the only ones we will experience.
The playlist is a little bit of groove, grit, grunge, guts, and a little gullibility to go with all of that. I had lots of fun creating it!
Happy grooving lovies!!!
